Photomicrograph competition

Send in pictures or drawings that show the beauty of microbiology and have a chance to win a replica of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's microscope made by museum Boerhaave!

In 2023, we will commemorate the 300th anniversary of the death of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, commonly known as “the Father of Microbiology”, and one of the first microscopists. Microbiologists still use microscopes to visualize what is not visible with the naked eye. The “Antoni van Leeuwenhoek year” is a great opportunity to celebrate the beauty of microscopic observation.

In light of this event, the KNVM organizes a photomicrograph competition.

You are invited to submit an image before October 1, 2022 to photocontest [at] knvm.org with the subject “photomicrograph competition”, in which an organism or microbial process is visualized at microscopic level. These may be photos, scans or drawings based on microscopic observations. The image must be created by the participant with high resolution to allow enlargement and should be submitted as .jpg or .png. The photomicrographs will be judged by a jury, including the well-known 'microphotographer' Wim van Egmond. The criteria for selection will include both aesthetics and originality.

Prize:

The best 12 photomicrographs will be part of a 2023 calendar and also posted on the KNVM website. In addition, a winner will be selected, who will receive a replica of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's microscope.
