Last year (2021) we had to let the BaMa take place online due to the Corona pandemic. Fortunately, this year we again had the possibility of a physical meeting in Papendal.

The 60 registered students could participate in the plenary sessions of the KNVM spring meeting with renowned speakers and look around at companies and organizations on the exhibition floor. After 2 years without physical meetings, everyone was very happy to be able to really look each other in the eye again and enjoy the enthusiasm of the students.

The BaMa symposium was opened and 22 enthusiastic students presented their Bachelor and Master projects in a talk or with a poster(pitch). The program was very varied, covering microbiology in its full breadth. During the lunch break there was time to look at the posters, discuss with students and vote for the best posters (top 3). After lunch, there was  a talk by the GEM team from Groningen.

The poster prize was won by Anouk Pieters (Fontys Hogeschool) with the poster 'Antibacterial coatings on thermoplastic masks', She conducted her research at the Fontys lectorate Applied Natural Sciences (Eindhoven) in collaboration with Orfit Industries (Belgium). She won with a whopping 22% of the votes.

The 4-member jury had the task of designating the winner of the best talk. All presentations were of high quality. Isaac Gorres (Radboud University) with his presentation "Age is not just a number: The effect of filter media age on the performance of rapid sand filters in drinking water treatment" emerged as the winner.

We thank everyone for their contribution to the 10th BaMa symposium and congratulate the winners of both the best presentation and poster.

We hope to organize another great BaMa symposium next year where we can meet again in Papendal!
